Designing and Implementing Storage on AWS

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to AWS storage services and how to design, implement, and optimise storage solutions in the AWS Cloud to meet application and business requirements.

Designing and Implementing Storage on AWS covers the full breadth of AWS storage services, including object, block, file, hybrid, and edge storage. Through presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on labs, you learn how to evaluate storage options, design secure and resilient architectures, move data to and from AWS, and optimise storage solutions for cost, performance, and scalability.

Course objectives

In this course, you will learn to:

  • Describe the benefits and primary use cases of core AWS storage services
  • Select and design storage solutions based on application and business requirements
  • Configure storage resources to integrate with other AWS services
  • Choose appropriate methods for moving data between on-premises environments and AWS
  • Design storage solutions that protect data at rest and in transit
  • Set up monitoring and observability to understand storage usage and access patterns
  • Design and optimise storage solutions for cost, scalability, and performance

Prerequisites

We recommend that attendees of this course have:

  • Completed AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, AWS Technical Essentials, or equivalent real-world experience

Target audience

This course is intended for:

  • Solution architects
  • Cloud storage engineers
  • Cloud operations specialists
  • DevOps engineers

Day 1 – Object and block storage foundations

The first day introduces cloud storage concepts and Well-Architected storage design principles. You design and implement object storage solutions using Amazon S3, covering access control, lifecycle management, data protection, and large-scale operations. The day concludes with block storage fundamentals and designing solutions using Amazon EBS.

Day 2 – Block and file storage solutions

Day two focuses on implementing block storage with Amazon EBS, including volume management, snapshots, performance, and data protection. You then work with cloud file storage using Amazon EFS and explore managed file systems with Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, NetApp ONTAP, OpenZFS, and Lustre through hands-on labs.

Day 3 – Hybrid storage, data movement, and optimisation

The final day covers hybrid and edge storage architectures using AWS Storage Gateway and the AWS Snow Family. You learn how to move data to AWS using AWS DataSync and AWS Transfer Family, design backup and disaster recovery solutions with AWS Backup and AWS DRS, and monitor and optimise storage using AWS observability services.
