Basic knowledge of the common structure and requirements of management system standards (MSSs)

Day 1: ISO 19011, principles of internal auditing, and competence of internal auditors

Introduction to management systems and the role of internal audits in supporting organizational objectives. Participants will explore the guidelines of ISO 19011, gain an understanding of the principles of auditing, and learn about the ethical requirements, responsibilities, and competencies expected of internal auditors. The day also covers audit terminology, risk-based thinking, and the importance of maintaining objectivity and impartiality throughout the audit process.

Day 2: Establishing the internal audit program and preparing internal audits

Learn how to develop, implement, and manage an internal audit program that aligns with organizational goals and management system requirements. Participants will explore audit planning techniques, audit scope and criteria definition, resource allocation, and audit scheduling. The day also covers preparing audit documentation, creating audit checklists, and conducting effective opening meetings.

Day 3: Conducting and closing internal audits and undertaking follow-up activities

Develop the practical skills needed to conduct internal audits effectively. Topics include collecting and verifying audit evidence, interviewing auditees, identifying and documenting audit findings, and communicating results. Participants will also learn how to prepare audit reports, conduct closing meetings, evaluate corrective actions, and perform follow-up activities to ensure continual improvement and management system effectiveness.

Exam

The “PECB Certified Management Systems Internal Auditor” exam fully meets the requirements of the PECB Examination and Certification Program (ECP). It covers the following competency domains:

Domain 1: Fundamental internal audit concepts and principles
Domain 2: Managing an internal audit program and preparing internal audits
Domain 3: Planning, conducting, and closing an internal audit

Certification

You can apply for one of the credentials listed in the following table after passing the exam. You will receive a certificate once you fulfill all the requirements related to the selected credential.
