The Managing Benefits Foundation & Practitioner Combined course provides a comprehensive learning journey through both the foundational principles and advanced application of benefits management. Over five intensive days, participants gain the knowledge and practical skills required to identify, plan, realise, measure and sustain benefits across projects, programmes and portfolios.

Many organisations struggle to translate strategic intent into measurable value. This combined course ensures that participants first build a strong understanding of the principles, terminology and framework of benefits management before progressing to practitioner-level application.

The course covers the full Benefits Management Cycle and equips participants to embed benefits management practices into structured delivery environments. Course objectives

By the end of this combined course, participants will be able to:

  • Planning the implementation of benefits management, selecting appropriate strategies to sustain and measure progress.
  • Selecting and adapting the principles, practices and techniques to suit different organizational contexts.
  • Applying activities that should be undertaken during each of the practices of the Benefits Management Cycle, together with the accountabilities and responsibilities of each of the defined roles.
  • Evaluating examples of benefits management information (documents).
  • Analyzing the solutions adopted in relation to a given scenario.

Day 1 – Overview and Principles, Identify and Quantify, Value and Appraise, Plan

The course begins with an introduction to benefits management principles and the overall framework. Participants explore definitions, objectives and key characteristics of successful benefits management.

The session continues with techniques for identifying and quantifying benefits, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives. Participants then examine approaches for valuing and appraising benefits to support informed investment decisions.

The day concludes with structured planning techniques, including governance, ownership and benefit realisation roadmaps.

Day 2 – Realize, Review, Portfolio-Based Application, Implement, Sustain and Measure, Take Mock Exam

Day two focuses on how benefits are realised in practice and how to review performance against expectations. Participants explore how benefits management applies in portfolio contexts and how to optimise value across multiple initiatives.

Implementation techniques for sustaining and measuring benefits are covered in detail. The day concludes with a mock Foundation exam to consolidate learning and prepare for assessment.

Day 3 – Mock Exam Review, Recap and Foundation Exam

The third day begins with a review of the mock exam, clarifying key concepts and addressing knowledge gaps. Participants recap core principles and prepare for the Foundation certification exam, which is conducted at the end of the day.

Day 4 – Overview of the Practitioner Exam, Identify and Quantify, Value and Appraise, Plan

The Practitioner section begins with an overview of the exam format and scenario-based approach. Participants revisit identification, quantification and appraisal techniques from a more applied and analytical perspective.

The focus is on adapting principles, practices and techniques to different organisational contexts and applying them to structured case scenarios. Planning activities are reviewed with an emphasis on governance, accountability and measurable outcomes.

Day 5 – Realize, Review, Portfolio-Based Application, Implement, Sustain and Measure, Practitioner Exam

The final day focuses on practitioner-level application of realisation, review and portfolio-based benefits management. Participants examine how to implement, sustain and measure benefits in complex environments.

The course concludes with the Practitioner certification exam.

This combined course prepares participants for both the Managing Benefits Foundation and Managing Benefits Practitioner certification exams.

The exam is will take place at the end of the course on onsite classroom courses

For Virtual courses we will send out a voucher that gives you access to an online exam. This can be booked and taken home monitored by a proctor via camera.
