This course is designed to prepare experienced testing professionals for the ISTQB® Advanced Technical Test Analyst certification. It focuses on specialised technical test design and execution techniques that are essential for complex software systems. You will learn to analyse architecture, structure test preparations and control test environments to ensure that quality risks are identified and mitigated early and effectively.
The training provides both the theory and practical application of advanced technical test techniques, including structural test design, non-functional testing and test tools. You work with examples and case studies that mirror real industry settings. The course follows the ISTQB® Advanced Level Technical Test Analyst syllabus, combining hands-on exercises with deep dives into performance, security and structural test challenges.
ISTQB® Foundation Certificate and substantial experience within testing or software development are required to benefit fully from this course.
About Sue Atkins
As a self-confessed bug-magnet, quality advocate and risk nut, Sue Atkins has been active in the world of software testing and process improvement for over thirty years.
She has experience of software development from both the waterfall and Agile perspectives across a diverse range of sectors – from banking and telecoms to healthcare and retail.
Sue has a passion for training and loves to help others grow their skills in all dimensions of testing, quality and process improvement. She has spoken at a number of conferences, is co-chair of the Scottish Testing Group and was a member of the programme committee for EuroSTAR 2022 – Europe’s largest Testing Conference.

Structural testing and code coverage
You explore techniques for structural test design, focusing on measuring code coverage and deriving test cases from code and architecture. This includes approaches to ensure internal software structures are exercised effectively.
Non-functional testing overview
The course covers performance, reliability, scalability and security testing, explaining how to set up and interpret these tests, and how to incorporate non-functional criteria into your test process.
Test environments and automation
You will learn practical approaches to configuring test environments, using tools to automate test execution, and integrating them into continuous delivery pipelines.
Technical test tools
This section gives you hands-on insight into tools used to support technical testing, including profiling, debugging, monitoring and reporting tools commonly used in complex system testing.
Performance and load testing
You gain understanding of how to design and execute performance and load tests to uncover bottlenecks and ensure systems meet performance expectations.
Security test techniques
The course introduces security testing methods, covering common vulnerabilities and how to test system resilience against attack vectors.

About the exam
The 120 minute examination is a closed book, 45-question multiple choice exam. Candidates must score a minimum of 30 to become a ISTQB certified Advanced Technical Test Analyst. Examinations are independently administered.
