M_o_R® 4 Practitioner

M_o_R® 4 Practitioner builds on the principles of the Management of Risk (M_o_R®) framework and equips participants with practical skills to apply, tailor and adapt risk management strategies across organisational contexts. The course emphasises real-world application of structured risk processes, principles and perspectives to enable effective risk governance and decision-making in strategic, programme, project and operational settings.

This course deepens your understanding of how to apply the M_o_R 4 integrated risk management framework to create and protect organisational value. Participants learn how to work with guiding principles, perspectives and the complete process cycle of M_o_R 4, including identification, assessment, response planning, contingency planning, monitoring and reporting. The course blends theoretical insight with practical application so delegates can apply risk management tools and techniques directly in their work environment.

Course objectives

Upon completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the M_o_R 4 principles and integrated framework in practical situations
  • Understand and use the six M_o_R 4 perspectives to assess risks across contexts
  • Identify and assess critical risks and determine appropriate responses
  • Plan risk responses, including contingency planning
  • Monitor, report and adjust risk strategies to support decision-making processes
  • Prepare for and take the M_o_R 4 Practitioner exam

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for the M_o_R 4 Practitioner examination.

Target audience

This qualification is aimed at professionals working in corporate governance environments who are responsible for identifying, assessing, planning or managing risks, or reporting on risk management activities across the organisation.

Purpose of Risk Management

Participants explore the fundamentals of risk management, including challenges to effective practice and how risk supports corporate governance and enterprise risk management across organisational structures.

Integrated Framework

This part of the course explains the M_o_R® 4 integrated framework, illustrating how it guides risk management activities to create and protect value consistently across the organisation.

M_o_R 4 Principles and Perspectives

Participants become familiar with the guiding principles that continually support effective risk management, and learn how to assess risks through the lens of the six distinct M_o_R® 4 perspectives to help decision-makers protect organisational value.

People and Culture

The course emphasises how people and organisational culture influence the effectiveness of risk management, covering communication, leadership involvement and cultural drivers that underpin successful risk practices.

The M_o_R 4 Process Cycle

Delegates are guided through the full M_o_R® 4 process cycle, designed to ensure effective application of risk activities. This includes defining the relationship between processes and understanding supporting techniques and documentation.

Identify and Assess Critical Risks

This section focuses on identifying and assessing the most critical risks facing an organisation, enabling decision-makers to understand how risks collectively impact the likelihood of achieving objectives.

Response and Contingency Planning

Participants learn how to apply structured processes to plan risk responses that enhance the probability of achieving objectives, including contingency allocation planning for effective decision support.

Monitoring, Reporting and Adapting

The final component teaches how to apply monitoring and reporting processes that deliver timely, insightful updates on risk status and allow stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of risk strategies, adapting them as needed.

  • Objective-testing format
  • 2 hours 15 minutes duration
  • This is an ‘open book’ examination. The Management of Risk: Creating and Protecting Value (M_o_R® 4 ) publication is permitted. No materials other than this publication and the examination materials may be used in the examination. The official manual may be annotated and tabulated but no sticky notes and loose-leaf papers containing additional notes will be allowed.
  • During Open Book examinations you have the option to use your Official Core Guidance Paperback Book, if you have one, or your Official Core Guidance eBook. Learn more here
  • Questions are multiple choice
  • A total score of 33 out of 65 (50% or higher) is required to pass

How to take the exam:

Regular classroom courses:
Paperbased exam at the end of the last course day

Virtual courses:
You will get an exam voucher that gives you access to an online exam. This can be booked and taken home monitored by a proctor via camera.

The trainer will also guide you through the procedures on how to book and prepare for the exam during the course

For both alternatives:
If you fail on your first attempt you receive a free online retake voucher. This can only be conducted online.
