ISO 22301 Lead Implementer

ISO/IEC 22301 Lead Implementer is a professional training course that equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to implement and manage a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) in accordance with the ISO/IEC 22301 standard. The course combines theoretical insights with practical applications, preparing candidates to design, lead and continually improve business continuity strategies that support resilience and organisational preparedness.

ISO/IEC 22301 is the international standard for Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS) and provides a framework for organisations to identify potential disruptions, implement protective measures, and ensure efficient response and recovery during disruptive incidents. This Lead Implementer course helps participants plan, develop, implement and maintain a BCMS that aligns with organisational goals, risk appetite and regulatory expectations. Through real-world examples, case discussions and interactive exercises, participants build confidence to lead business continuity initiatives in any context.

Prerequisites:

Day 1 – Introduction to ISO 22301 and initiation of a BCMS

The course begins with an overview of the course objectives and structure, providing participants with a clear understanding of the learning path and certification process.

Participants are introduced to relevant standards and regulatory frameworks that influence business continuity and organisational resilience. The fundamentals of a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) are explored, including key principles and terminology that underpin ISO 22301.

The day continues with guidance on initiating the implementation of a BCMS, including understanding the organisation and its context, analysing the existing management system and defining the scope of the BCMS. This establishes a structured foundation for planning and implementation activities.

Day 2 – Planning the implementation of a BCMS

This day focuses on planning activities necessary to implement an effective BCMS. Leadership and commitment are examined as critical success factors, along with the development of BCMS policies aligned with organisational objectives.

Participants explore organisational structure and the allocation of roles and responsibilities within the BCMS. Documentation management is addressed to ensure structured and controlled processes.

The session also covers competence and awareness requirements to ensure personnel are prepared for continuity responsibilities.

A detailed review of Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and risk assessment methodologies provides participants with practical tools for identifying critical activities, assessing impacts and analysing threats that could disrupt operations.

Day 3 – Implementation of a BCMS

Day three concentrates on translating plans into operational business continuity capabilities. Participants explore how to develop a Business Continuity strategy and define appropriate protection and mitigation measures.

The development of Business Continuity plans and procedures is addressed in detail, including the creation of incident response plans, emergency response plans and crisis management plans.

Participants also examine IT recovery planning, restoration planning and communication planning to ensure coordinated and structured response during disruptive incidents. This day emphasises practical implementation and operational readiness.

Day 4 – BCMS monitoring, measurement, continuous improvement and preparation for a certification audit

This day focuses on validating and improving the effectiveness of the BCMS. Participants learn how to design and conduct tests and exercises to evaluate preparedness.

Measurement and monitoring of the BCMS are examined, including performance indicators and evaluation mechanisms.

Internal audit processes and management review activities are covered to ensure oversight and accountability.

The treatment of non-conformities and structured continual improvement practices are explored to strengthen resilience over time.

The day concludes with preparation for the certification audit, including understanding auditor expectations and evaluating the competence of implementers.

Day 5 – Certification Exam

The final day is dedicated to exam preparation and completion of the certification examination. Participants review key concepts and clarify complex topics before sitting the official exam in accordance with the certification body’s procedures.

The exam is will take place at the end of the course on onsite classroom courses

For Virtual courses we will send out a voucher that gives you access to an online exam. This can be booked and taken home monitored by a proctor via camera. More information about the exam rules will be send from PECB.

  • The exam duration is three (3) hours. Non-native speakers receive an additional half an hour.
  • The exam contains essay type questions.

As the exam isan Multiple Choice Open book exam, candidates are authorized to use:

  • A copy of the standard.
  • Course notes from the Participant Handout;
  • Any personal notes made by the student during the course; and
  • A hard copy dictionary
