ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation is an entry-level course designed to introduce you to the internationally recognised Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) standard. The course focuses on providing a solid understanding of core concepts, key requirements, and foundational elements of ISO/IEC 42001 to support responsible, secure and compliant use of AI in organisational settings.
This foundational course gives participants insight into the structure, principles and essential requirements of the ISO/IEC 42001 standard, which is used to establish, implement, maintain and improve an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). Through examples and practical exercises, participants gain an understanding of risk governance, value creation, ethical AI considerations and how the standard guides organisations in managing AI-related risk and controls.

PrerequisitesThere are no formal prerequisites for this course. A general interest in AI governance, risk or information security is helpful but not required.
Target audienceThis course is ideal for professionals who need a broad overview of AI governance and management, including team members, business stakeholders, compliance officers, risk practitioners, technologists and leaders seeking foundational understanding of AI risk and management systems.

Participants are introduced to the fundamental concepts of AI governance, including why structured management systems are important and how they support organisational objectives and trust in AI applications.
This section explains the structure of the ISO/IEC 42001 standard and how its clauses relate to establishing, maintaining and improving an AIMS. Participants will gain clarity on how the standard aligns with risk-based thinking and organisational value creation.
Participants explore essential terminology used in ISO/IEC 42001, including key principles, definitions and how these concepts support consistent application of AI governance and management practices.
This part of the course covers the foundational requirements of the standard, including organizational context, AI risk assessment, planning, support and operation essentials that contribute to an effective baseline AIMS.
The course concludes with an overview of exam requirements and sample topics to help candidates prepare for the ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation certification exam.

After successfully completing the exam, you can apply for the credentials shown on the table below. You will receive a certificate once you comply with all the requirements related to the selected credential. Examination rules and policies
Results will be communicated by email in a period of 6 to 8 weeks, after taking the exam. The results will not include the exact grade of the candidate, only a mention of pass or fail.
Candidates who successfully complete the examination will be able to apply for a certified scheme which is explained in the course description.
In the case of a failure, the results will be accompanied with the list of domains in which the candidate had failed to provide guidance for exams’ retake preparation.
Candidates, who disagree with the exam results, may file a complaint by writing to examination@pecb.com or through PECB ticketing system.
There is no limit on the number of times a candidate may retake an exam. However, there are some limitations in terms of allowed time-frame in between exam retakes, such as:
After the fourth attempt, a waiting period of 12 months from the last session date is required, in order for candidate to sit again for the same exam. Regular fee applies.
For the candidates that fail the exam in the 2nd retake, PECB recommends to attend an official training in order to be better prepared for the exam.
